Hacienda Hearts: A Journey to Beach Dog Rescue Mexico

I recently spent some time in Mérida, but the real highlight of the trip wasn't the city's colonial architecture, like the iconic Plaza Grande, it was a visit to Beach Dog Rescue. My wife has been friends with Heather, one of the founders, since they were kids, so we headed out into the Yucatan jungle to see the operation she and her husband Gil have built.
They run a 350-year-old off grid hacienda that serves as a sanctuary for street dogs.

New Equipment
Adex Arc:
I recently picked up the Adex Arc to bridge a gap in my heavy club and mace training. What's really cool about it is that the unique handle length generates some serious mace-like torque, even when I'm using it for club movements. Plus, it's still short enough that I don't have to worry about smashing my feet! I've also found that you can use 3D-printed Adjusta-Bell spacers to extend the Arc to a standard mace length, which is a plus.

Adex Club:
Adex developed an adjustable club that allows you to scale the weight from 4-5lbs to 25-27lbs depending on the club handle. Its great if you don't have the space for multiple heavy clubs sets and easy to take with you while traveling.

Combined with kettlebells you can have a full body strength and conditioning program.

This is the hash function Bitcoin uses to generate addresses because the total combinations of hashes that can be uniquely generated is insanley large. Almost impossible to create the same address.
Last day of swimming class was on July 5th. We swam with our instructor and a few experienced swimmers to the second buoy at Ala Moana beach, which seemed at the time a far distance for a beginner like me, but it wasn't too bad it was actually nice and enjoyable.
I'll continue to swim 2-3 days a week and start logging my swims here just like I do with my workouts and runs (if I ever start running again).

My 8 year old AMD desktop build has finally died with a suspected motherboard issue. I built that as a gaming rig mainly to play Battlefield 3 and the racing simulator Live for Speed. It had an AMD Athlon II X3 435 Processor, and a ATI Radeon™ HD 5770 Graphics card that ran BF and LFS at decent graphic settings surprisingly well. After tons of research on Reddit's /buildapc subreddit and reading articles on various tech sites about current computer hardware, I decided to build another desktop with AMD's new APU processors with built-in graphics.

Added a new CodePen Pen, Cryptoticker.
This uses CoinGecko and its API to fetch data on every browser refresh. (Working on polling solution)
Added two other old projects I found that I was hosting locally. My plan is to migrate all locally hosted endppoint to either a SaaS or a VPS.

2018-01-04
I purchased the Learn Node course early last year, but did not find the time to go through it. Instead of coming up with a new years resolution, I figured it would be great to start 2018 learning something new. In the next few days I will start the course and my hope is to regularly post updates on my progress.
As with all Wes’ courses, I expect it will be a fun one!

I use Pocket mainly to save articles for later reading, and archive them if they are worth a reference at a later time. You can pretty much Pocket anything such as links, videos, and images. My bookmarks now only contain sites that I frequent, and financial sites to lessen the chance of link hijacking when searching for the site on Google.
Similar to my last post Export Pushbullet Pushes, I wanted to export all my Pocket data in text format so I wrote this bash script:

Pushbullet is a pretty cool service that I used for some time to send files and links to my other devices. I also used it to mirror Android notifications on my PCs.
I wanted to export all my pushes in text format so I wrote a small bash script:
#!/bin/bash # see https://docs.pushbullet.com/#list-pushes apitoken=$1 n=0 cursor='' while true; do curl --header "Access-Token: $apitoken" \ --data-urlencode active="true" \ --data-urlencode modified_after="0" \ $cursor \ --get \ https://api.

Migrating to Netlify

Introduction Just recently migrated my self-hosted site to netlify. Site was hosted on an old raspberry pi which I used as a low powered development system for small projects. It was getting tedious to push commits to GitHub, ssh into the pi, pull down changes, then finally run my custom hugo build script to generate the static files and reload nginx.
I discovered netlify on hugo's hosting and development section. The process was pretty simple, instructions were clear and easy to follow.

Introduction Creating long secure passwords can be difficult. Trying to find a way to store them securely is another story. That is why I always recommend to friends and family to start using a password manager. A good password manager let you store your passwords in a secure database, associate a key file with you database for even tighter security, generate long random passwords for new accounts, and auto-type username and passwords for you.

Introduction I've been watching MotoGP for about 10 years now, and today it still amazes me that the riders have the ability to comfortably squeeze into their racing leathers with balls the size of theirs. It's a shame the sport is not hugely popular in the states… How often do you get to see the #1 and #2 athlete compete against one another each week?
This will be a continuing series of the process I took to scrape over 30 years of MotoGP data using python.

Updated September 30, 2017
I decided to log my runs and workouts, mainly for accountability purposes. Maybe in 20 years I will look back at this and see moments I've slacked off from training.
Run routes added for 2017 runs. Due to the tedious effort of manually exporting the gpx data for each run from Samsung Health, uploading it to Strava, then generating an embed link, I won't add routes for 2016.
